Early in the shift, came off a call to hear Sarah #1 and Sarah #4 talking about a band I'd never heard of called Kooks. Sarah #4 said she was going to see them in Bournemouth in December.

I told them I was going to see The Pogues in London at Christmas. They were mucho impressed, and Sarah #1 waxed lyrical about the genius that is Shane MacGowan. I added "They've got a new lady in to sing Fairytale Of New York."

Sarah #1 got up and, as she went past me, replied "Nobody can really replace her."

From someone who, less than eighteen months ago, scoffed when I confessed I'd cried the night the news broke that Kirsty had died, that was touching.

I think she's right. It's hard to imagine anyone other than Kirsty doing that song justice - though I suppose it does no one any good to just leave the song unperformed from now on, does it? :(

It is important to keep the song alive and, as I said on here last Christmas, a combination of The Pogues and any feisty female singer can carry it off well. Amy Rigby would be my first choice; I'd also be very happy with Mary Coughlan, Mary Lee (frontwoman of Mary Lee's Corvette), KT Tunstall or Nerina Pallot.

I'm a huge Kirsty fan. I suppose my big hero is Morrissey, and I always thought she was a kinda female version, but she touched my life in a way that even he didn't. I'm not sure that there are any female singer-songwriters around today who come anywhere near her standard. Girls have seemingly reverted to singing about bollocks in a way that she refused to.

I didn't cry when she died, but last year I saw a documentary about her mother trying to find the truth about her death and it had me in floods.
