Having been up much later than intended last night trying to install a sound driver on my laptop (finally succeeded, thank goodness, and sound is back), it was noon today before I set off for Gosport. Had to make a detour up to MK for one bit of last-minute Christmas shopping, meaning I had to negotiate a labyrinthine network of roads and roundabouts to get onto the M1.

The M1 bit was plain enough sailing but the M25 was mobbed, and it rained all through my time on The Road To Hell (over the afternoon the weather alternated between hot sun and pouring rain). There was a bad traffic jam on the road from the M25 on to the M3, and we continued to crawl along the first bit of the M3. Four broken down cars sat on the hard shoulder, so they were probably something to do with the delay. At least French & Saunders, then Craig Charles, on Radio 2 made it all bearable.

Stopped off at Fleet services for a KFC pig-out. The journey from there on wasn't too bad - until I hit the road from Fareham to Gosport and got snarled up in a half hour crawl. Finally made it to the parents' at 5 pm. As I was unloading the car boot, Hardcore Sue came up to me. She'd come over to drop off my Christmas present, not knowing whether I'd be around. We chatted for a little while and agreed with a kiss and a hug that we'd try and meet up on Boxing Day.

Over to my gran's with me ma to meet my aunts for the big present exchange, then back to the parents' to lay out the nibbles on the table and watch Christmas TOTP 1978. Those were the days, when we had a proper Christmas number 1.

Have a cracking Christmas, everyone!
