On the road leading up to the office yesterday morning I noticed my petrol gauge dangerously close to the E line, with an orange light with a picture of a petrol pump lit up. So as well as feeling radged off about having to pay full whack for gym membership, I spent the whole work day hoping there was enough gas in the tank to get me to the Shell station just down the road. I did, thank goodness.

With the mood I've been in lately, a tonic was desperately needed. Fortunately, there was Oddsocks at the New Theatre Royal last night, putting their offbeat spin on The Merry Wives of Windsor. As I arrived at front of house to collect my ticket, Carol, who was standing in the doorway between the foyer and the downstairs bar, came over and said hello, and I joined her and Aussie for a quick chat.

The play was presented with a 1950s TV theme, complete with skiffle music - in the Oddsocks version, John Fenton is a skiffle singer - and black and white adverts on a big screen for the various miracle products made by "our sponsors, Quickly". Avita Jay was fantastic (and very attractive *swoon*) as Bollywood star Pinky Lafinga, who played Mrs Ford and Anne Page. Andrew McGillan was hilarious as Sir John Falstaff, owner of the Two Pies Cafe. In this version the wives hide him in a Bendix and put him through the wash cycle with the laundry. Hysterical.

After the show I joined a couple of other Oddsocks fans in conversation with Elli Mackenzie, one of the company's mainstays, who still had her fairy wings on. She was delighted to hear that I'd been to all their shows since 2004, and autographed my programme. Met Aussie and Carol again on the way out and we exchanged "Merry Christmases"; they didn't offer me a lift back, but all their family were there so I guess they had a full carload. Still, the walk back to the Hard made good exercise...
