Saturday, but an early start this morning nonetheless, as I was headed for the Isle of Wight to meet up with Daniel, who was hosting a family coin-casting morning at a primary school that was to begin at 9.30. Katie Bee, Digby, Thea and Digby's brother Martin were to meet us there - but Daniel warned me on the drive there from Ryde that they weren't likely to be there for the beginning. "They're not early risers!"

They showed up near the end of the coin-casting session. Katie and I immediately had a long catch-up chat and she wished me well with the job hunting, saying she was "sure [I'd] be fine." We then got started on a discussion about the Tudors, until the last of the kids had left and Daniel had finished packing up the equipment. Then it was down to the beach for picnic snacks (after a stop at the post office for Katie to buy Thea a bucket and spade).

We'd been on the beach a while when Daniel made the not inconsiderable walk to the supermarket to buy reinforcements of food. Then half an hour after he returned he found he'd lost his wallet. While the rest of us scoured the areas of the beach we'd been on, Daniel trooped all the way back to the supermarket - thankfully he returned with a broad grin, holding it. We repaired to Minghella's cafe for ice creams, coffee and reminiscences about Daniel's college exploits, then Katie and I resumed our musings on British history.

We stopped in central East Cowes to stock up on grub at the Co-op and try and get two disposable barbecues - they only had one.

Digby helped Martin out with the food, Katie said they were doing a great job and I suggested they should enter Come Dine With Me. Katie, amazingly, had never heard of the programme so I had to explain the premise to her. Martin insisted he was a terrible cook, Katie wouldn't have it. They put Absolute 80s radio on in the background so we were treated to several of the sounds of our youth. Over sausages and salad in baps, pretzels, and olives and feta cheese, Katie and I had another long chat, and we all asked after Daniel's brothers, nephews and nieces. Digby observed that Katie had eaten nearly all the pretzels; I felt a touch guilty as she'd been handing several to me every time she took a dollop, but she didn't dob on me.

Martin asked if I knew a friend of his family who works at the same place as me; I said I didn't but that there's a lady on my team who has the same surname. It turns out my colleague is married to the man Martin knows. Katie made a gesture with her hands of a circle contracting, as if to indicate a shrinking world...
