Apr. 10th, 2011 08:46 pmDrove to the Hawk girls' game at Gloucester. A bit of a doozy for my first drive outside Hampshire, but the cost of a train plus taxi to the way-out-of-town ground would have been astronomical. Set off nice and early and took generous breaks at Sutton Scotney (didn't see Jeff Stelling) and Membury services. No problems apart from getting beeped by a couple of people on the dual carriageway from Swindon to Cirencester for dawdling along in the right-hand lane at 45 mph and forcing them to undertake me. Oops.
We lost 2-1. The referee was a bigger Homer than Mr Simpson, and there was certainly a lot of questioning of the linesman's flag against Charley that meant Jess's magnificent headed injury time equaliser got disqualified, but our girls had had plenty of opportunities to score that they didn't take, notably Laura having an open goal at her mercy late in the game and ballooning over the bar. That leaves us needing to win both our last two - Southampton Saints and Cullompton are certainly beatable, but they're no pushovers. Just a week ago everyone was confident we were going to get to the playoffs. One bad game and everything's back up in the air.
It's only now, just after arriving home, that my climbing a motoring mountain is sinking in - "Bloody hell, I just drove to Gloucester and back". I've been more concerned with the girls.
One brighter note on Radio Solent on the last leg of the journey home. Since I was a youth I've loved the goddess that is Maggie De Monde. Well, she's back, as half of a duo Maggie and Martin. They played their new song, Night Of A Thousand Stars, which is absolutely wonderful. The DJ said it "sounds like a lost Eurovision song" especially with Maggie throwing a French phrase in - he had a point. I wish we were sending that to Düsseldorf instead of our bland Blue effort. Still, just checked out their Myspace page which says they're putting an album out soon.
Got to go type my match report before I hit the hay *sigh*
