Sep. 5th, 2010 06:40 pmYesterday afternoon as I entered Westleigh Park, Trevor, always one step ahead of the game, was waiting for me just inside the turnstile and asked whether I'd be gate man again for the Ladies' match today. Remembering the past headaches of being on duty at women's matches, I pointed out how people are always wanting to go back out again. Initially Trev said they'd have to climb over - I made a mental note to send them down the tunnel to the clubhouse instead of taking that risk - but then he came up with the idea of opening the big gate a little way and providing me with a table there.
Then we settled down to watch the Hawks men play Thurrock. When the visitors got an early goal I groaned, thinking 'here we go again', but the Hawks ran out 4-1 winners, the highlight a Muzzy Tiryaki strike that was pure Turkish delight.
In the event, this morning Trevor and Dean didn't have the keys to the turnstile booths anyway, so they had to set the table up by the big gate. All went well except for a couple of times when the wind blew the gate closed, carrying with it the giant traffic bollard propping it open. Carl grumbled about being charged £2 to get in when he'd brought some of the players' post-match nibbles; from what I could hear of the distant conversation, I think he had a bit of a moan to Trevor, but Trev persuaded him of the nobility of everyone chipping in to help the girls out.
On the pitch the Ladies, missing four key players through suspensions, injury and holiday (someone really needs to tell these lasses that the season is from August to May, which leaves June and July for holidays), came back from behind twice to gallumph their way to a 2-2 draw. With Tracy, after all, unable to turn out for us the 2 weeks we're keeperless, Dick was asking everybody whether they knew any available goalies. Sabrina tried to recruit Becky (former outfield player, hasn't played for six years), who said she'd only be any good in a five-a-side goal. I asked Liam's fiancée Louise (never played footie) "How's your goalkeeping?" Her reply was "Not great"...
