Went to Frome with the Hawk girls for their friendly on Sunday. I got a lift in Jenna's car with Sam and Chloe, but began feeling crook, complete with a dull headache, as we headed along the M27 towards Southampton - perhaps my nausea was brought on by going past E*******h? By the time we got onto the road approaching Stonehenge - which had heavy traffic - I had that unmistakable sensation in my throat and Jenna had to pull over at the roadside to let me throw up. For good measure I had to get out and chuck again eight miles from Frome. The girls were really nice about it; Jenna gave me two Nurofen (none of them had any Paracetamol) and moved me to the front seat with the window open, Chloe donated a bottle of still Lucozade and Sam let me have some wet wipes.

At the ground, having had a good blow to ease my blocked nasal airways - a major factor in my nausea - I flopped onto a bench in the stand - one of the ones in the shade. Thanks to the Hawks Ladies text network, and the need for Jenna to let everyone know why we were running behind schedule, all the Hawk players and followers knew about my ailment. Trev and Susie noticed that I was looking peaky while Val chided "You should have stayed at home". I explained that I'd felt fine when I set off. Spent the hour before kick-off relaxing in my seat, slipping between closed and open eyes. By the time the match began I was fit enough to make notes for my match report, even if I did come close to sliding off to sleep a few times during the first half. Becky was an absolute star and filled me in on everything I missed. Felt OK during the second half, and Val and Becky remarked how I'd got my colour back. The girls won 7-0 without breaking sweat, but then the opposition, a league lower, were fielding a mixture of first-teamers and reserves. As the girls trooped off the pitch most of them asked me if I was all right, and Laura said "Your nickname's going to be Sicknote now, you brought that on yourself." Better than Charlie Chunder.

Didn't risk a drink after the game; Jenna needed to leave pronto in any case.

Back to normal by yesterday morning, so went in to work - no problems. Last night it was back to Westleigh Park for a Hawks league game at last. Met up with all the usual crew, including Steph who's now a barmaid in the clubhouse. Joined Dick and Lauren for a pre-match whistle-wetter. Lauren asked me what had brought on my troubles the day before.

"Blocked airways, and a headache that I think came from overdosing on my hay fever nasal spray."

Lauren laughed. "We'll have to watch you. Junkie Wilhelmus."

Dick and Lauren got to discussing defensive tactics, and used their and my drinks and Lauren's mobile phone as the Hawks Ladies back four to illustrate them. And then we went into the ground and watched the male Hawks play out a 0-0 draw with Weston-super-Mare in which we had several chances on goal but couldn't get the ball in the onion bag.

These jolly people were outside the office canteen today, complete with their Beatles Yellow Submarine T-shirts. I chucked a few bob in their collecting bucket, then they asked if I'd seen their yellow submarine. I hadn't, so they urged me to go over to main reception and get a look at it parked outside. Very jolly.
