Mar. 19th, 2010 08:51 pmBack to Liss after work yesterday for the Ladies' Portsmouth Cup semi with Portsmouth University. Opted for a couple of Guinnesses in the little upstairs bar before the game, much to the amusement of Lauren and Jodie who reckoned I'd be rolling drunk by the end of the evening, while Mike pointed out that I was a day late. When the match officials arrived, one of the linesmen turned out to be the ref from Sunday. Trev and I both remarked that we were surprised he hadn't carded the Plymouth coach; he said he'd reported the guy to the Devon FA. Not many people from the Uni came up to the bar, but happily lovely Michelle popped in to say a quick hello to me and some of our girls. Martin the friendly barman and I followed Fulham's progress against Juventus via Sky Sports News till it was time for me to venture outside; meanwhile, outside the rain was pouring down. Martin pronounced the words I'd been dreading - "The rain's in for the night."
Shortly before kick-off Flo came over to pitch side so I got to have a brief chat with her; seeing the HWFC logo on my rain jacket she said "You've got the wrong coat on" - I had to remind her I'm involved with Hawks.
There is no cover at Liss. My rain jacket, with its hood, kept me from the worst of the elements, but getting my pen to make a mark on paper in relentless rain was the devil's own job. On the pitch, though, the Hawk girls rose to the occasion and were 4-0 in front by half-time. At the whistle, everybody made a run for the warmth of the bar, where there was good news waiting - Fulham had beaten la vecchia signora (la grande puttana to a Torino fan like me) 4-1 to go through on aggregate.
By the second half the pitch was an absolute pudding. The Uni pulled one back but our girls did enough in defence to comfortably hold on, and earn the opportunity for revenge on Pompey in the final. As one of the linesmen lived in Gosport, he gave me a lift home along with two of his pals who'd come.
Although I'd arranged to start work later this morning, between 8.30 and 9, that still meant getting up at 5.50 since going on the Guinness last night meant going in by bus today. Was walking around the office like a zombie for much of the afternoon but a couple of cans of Blue Charge (Asda's Red Bull clone) kept me going.
Had intended to catch the Lee Players doing Princess Ascending this evening but was feeling too bush whacked to go night driving, so lurched over to my cousin's where a little informal family birthday mini-get-together was on. Then home for a spot of Sport Relief.
