May. 10th, 2009 06:41 pmMoseyed over to Furze Lane to see the Portsmouth Uni girls' championship decider with Basingstoke. Before heading into the student village I stopped for a moment to take a look through the entrance next door, to what used to be my EBD school and is now a child development centre. The approach road was much as I remember it, though of course it has spanking new speed limit signs now, and there are a lot of new buildings on the site since I left in 1982, but I did get a glimpse of a bit of the familiar front of the admin block.
Went over to stand near where the Uni girls were warming up. Said hello to Flo, who said thanks for coming and added that lovely Michelle was "sagging off today." It turned out she was on holiday in Egypt - this was a rearranged game; when she booked her hols months ago she'd thought the season would be over by now.
That was a blow, but I still wanted the Uni to win to put Michelle into the higher division and get her a winner's medal. The blow was softened by the sight of some familiar faces in the crowd - Jodie, Telé, Liz and Laura from Hawks.
Five minutes into the second half, with the Uni 3-0 up, one of the Basingstoke players had her leg broken in a challenge and play was suspended for 45 minutes while we waited for the ambulance. After the restart the Uni added two more; at the final whistle I texted Michelle to give her the good news. Their captain Sophie produced a bottle of sparkling wine and sprayed it over all their players.
Walked all along Locksway Road in the blazing sun to find a bus going to the Hard, then had to wait 25 minutes for one to come. Home to learn Red Bull had finished 3-4 in the Spanish GP :D
