Apr. 26th, 2009 06:32 pmWhen I set off in late morning for Hawks Ladies' double header with Bracknell at Westleigh Park, a glorious sun was shining, so I wore just the old Hawks shirt the girls gave me a year ago, without jumper or jacket. After lunch at Burger King, arrived at Portsmouth Harbour to be told at the station ticket kiosk that bloody replacement buses were running instead of trains. Made it to the ground just in time for a pre-match Pepsi with ice in the clubhouse.
By the time the match started, the weather was less warm, with a fair old wind blowing at times, and it was quite parky sitting in the stand in just my footy shirt. During the first game Rob and Sarah, taking turns with a radio, conveyed the good news that Sebastian Vettel had come second in the Bahrain Grand Prix, and the (for Sarah) less happy updates from Middlesbrough's 2-0 defeat at Arsenal. On the pitch the first game was scoreless at half-time, but once Telé had opened the scoring early in the second half the girls ran rampant, running out 8-0 winners with Charlie bagging a hat-trick. Our seventh goal, nodded in by Telé, was gleefully announced by Trev on the PA as our 150th this season - prompting moans from the Bracknell girls that it was an own goal, but Telé had already claimed it to the ref by then.
In the interval between games, I darted for the warmth of the clubhouse. When I emerged, Jo and Becky said they'd all be meeting up for end-of-season drinks - "we start around 4 or 5 and get trolleyed" - next Sunday and invited me to join them as it was the weekend of my birthday as well as Charlie's.
The second game also started off quiet with few goalscoring opportunities on either side. Lisa Coops broke the deadlock late in the half, and the girls added two more after the break. I stood at pitchside with Rob, Christine, Sarah and Becky for this one and it seemed less cold there; for the second half we had some sunshine. And so ends our league season, played 22, won 21, drew 1, and just next week's piss-up and the League Cup Final to come.
