Mar. 22nd, 2009 06:35 pmHawks Ladies v Maidenhead United at Fort Blockhouse this afternoon, League Cup semi-final. Chelsea's dad Rob and I had a good moan to each other about yesterday's results (he's a Chelsea fan). Whenever I visited the dugout before the match there was a bit of an icy atmosphere, and I wondered if I'd somehow managed to offend Lisa (who was back for today's match), but then she's had a lot going on lately so perhaps she's just stressed.
As I said my hellos to the girls before the game, Sally and Telé were walking along together, so when I said "Hiya, Chantelle" both Chantelles turned and said hello back simultaneously.
We knew Maidenhead were a decent side - they held us to a draw at home in the league last year, and are favourites to win the First Division this time - and on the quarter hour they took the lead with what I have to admit was a brilliant goal. Hawks seemed lacking in cohesion, and our two strikers Lisa Cooper and Charlie were spending much of their time out wide - meaning when they crossed the ball, there was nobody in the box to get on the end of it. Sally came out with most credit, she worked hard all game. A comedy moment came when the Maidenhead manager was sent off for a comment about the ref, but as he was also their physio, the ref could only send him from the dugout - he had to remain at pitchside with his physio's bag (and keep his mouth shut). We did get an equaliser through Charlie just before the break.
During half time I said to Rob "Could be extra time and penalties."
"No, we'll win," he grinned. "We'll score three in the second half."
Just before the hour Telé limped off injured; Jenna F was ready to replace her, but realised when she took to the field that she'd forgotten to put her shinpads on, earning herself a Dick of the Day nomination - though if WAGs were eligible for that ignominious award, she'd have had a strong rival in Becky who, when asked to kick the ball back onto the pitch, did so - and watched her shoe go sailing onto the field after it. Jenna's introduction added much needed spark to the team, and soon afterwards Charlie put us in front. 2-1 was the final score, so the dream of the Quadruple remains alive - for a week at least...
