Sep. 28th, 2008 08:17 pmDown to the New Forest again as the Hawk girls once more faced Southampton Saints, this time in the FA Women's Cup. As all FAWC ties have to be played in enclosed grounds, and Blackfield & Langley FC still won't allow women to sully their precious pitch, today we were at the Waterside Sports & Social Club in Holbury.
Arrived in plenty of time - just as well, as I had to wait half an hour for my burger and chips. I did try to eat healthily, honest; my first choice was a prawn salad, but the camp chef announced apologetically "No prawns till Monday." It was only after I'd ordered burger and chips - less than a minute too late - that I heard two people order Sunday roast beef, an option not listed on either the menu or the blackboard. The burger and chips were OK, though...
Into the bar - Scrumpy Jack at £2.15 a pint :) - to watch the beginnings of the Singapore Grand Prix. It was looking sadly like Massa was going to build and hold a commanding lead over Lewis when I wandered over to the footy pitch. Lovely Michelle arrived with her baby nephew. I gave her the application pack I'd got her from my office; she thanked me but said she needs a full-time job as she's got a mortgage. We talked until the teams came out.
Saints gave us quite a good game but Hawks ran out 2-0 winners, a magnificent strike from Sally and a second that curled in off Jo's boot, both in the first half. Good news in the clubhouse at half-time : Lewis was in third and Massa was down in thirteenth. I asked a bloke what had happened to Massa and was told "He blew a fuel thingy. Got a ten second penalty." There were still a few laps to go when the teams re-emerged, so I walked back over to the footy pitch keeping my fingers crossed that Hamilton would complete the race.
Hawks slightly had the better of the second half, but Sam was sent off for a second bookable offence (throwing the ball down on the ground when a decision was given against us) and Sadie was booked for arguing with the ref after he overlooked a Saints handball. As Sadie's about to be made redundant, Charlie (out injured this week), who's her partner, yelled to her about how she'd have to pay her Hampshire FA fine for her. With Charlie saying how Sadie needs a new job to share the burden of bills, Michelle said she could have the application pack from our place.
Back to the bar, where Sky Sports News confirmed that Lewis had finished in third while Massa had remained out of the points. After the Belgian GP and Hamilton's appeal being thrown out, that's justice. When the girls emerged after getting changed Sadie thanked me for the application pack; she and Charlie agreed that 25 hours a week at my workplace would do her fine. She asked me a little bit about what the job involves and seemed happy enough. So I just might have some Hawk company at work soon.
On a less happy note, I now unmistakably have the beginnings of a cold. Arse.
