Sep. 27th, 2008 06:35 pmHawks v Shortwood United at Westleigh Park, FA Cup 2nd Qually. Our visitors were three divisions lower, but as we know from last year anything can happen in the FA Cup.
This game was not the tonic I needed after yesterday. To be honest Hawks were dire. Twice we took the lead, cue sighs of relief both times, but Shortwood battled hard for the whole 90 minutes, got an equaliser the first time from the penalty spot, threatened the whole time (missing two open goals) and were rewarded when they found their centre-forward unmarked in the box in time added on and he struck home to give them a fully deserved replay.
I joined a couple of other Hawks in shaking hands with and saying 'Well played' to some of the celebrating Shortwood people in the front row of the stand. Their players were dancing round the pitch like they'd won the FA Cup - and can you blame them?
So it's a replay in Gloucestershire - at high altitude - on Tuesday night. That'll be a tough one, and, alas, I won't be there - midweek away trips are over my budget and I'm on late shift anyway.
Popped into the clubhouse just long enough to learn East Stirlingshire had beaten Elgin 5-2. At Havant station, the ticket inspector asked me how we'd got on. "Two all," I said, hoping he didn't know we'd been playing lower league opposition. "I thought you were getting sorted out down there!" he grinned. "So did I, mate!" I replied climbing the stairway to the footbridge across to the far platform.
On the train I thought to myself : "Let's face it, we're shite."
