Sep. 26th, 2008 03:44 pmThe typing test consisted of being sat at a PC and asked to type the text of a page-and-a-half long article into a Word document, as is - that is, leaving the spelling and punctuation mistakes, of which there were several, as they were - in 10 minutes. I succeeded in leaving the text exactly as it was, even having to go back and un-correct a mistake when the computer corrected it automatically - but when Sandra, the lady organising the test, came round to signal the end of the 10 minutes and stop me I'd only got as far as one paragraph away from the end of the first page. My two-finger tapping just wasn't quick enough.
I put on a brave smile to say thank you and goodbye to Sandra, but walked out of the department and back to the TU with my heart in my boots. Told Sue #3 when I returned; she tried to offer a glimmer of hope, saying that when the others who'd gone for the post told me they'd "done all right" that didn't necessarily mean they'd completed the piece, and Collette added that she'd heard they were looking for accuracy rather than speed. I said nothing to them, but I know that out of the legions of our staff who applied, there must be at least one who input the text accurately and got it all done within the time limit. I knew I'd blown my chance of escaping the phones.
It's at times like this I'd usually call Katherine. But she's gone into hospital about to pop her babby out. So I guess I'll be moseying down to Waitrose to buy a few beers and spending the night solo drinking with some suitably downbeat music.
Have a good weekend, folks.
