Driving lesson. Went OK from where I was sitting (apart from one solitary moment's kerb-mounting coming round a corner) but Peter said I was coming into junctions too fast. He reckoned my junctions were 'lovely' last week but today I was applying the brake too little or too late. We live and learn.

Just got back from watching Macedonia v Netherlands at Gillian and Patrick's. Patrick made curry; when Gillian asked if I was hungry I said "A little" - so she brought me in a massive bowlful. Suffice to say that we started eating at the beginning of the first commercial break before the game, and I finished mine in about the 15th minute of the match.

I brought some cans of Grolsch round; Patrick had got a bottle of port in for me, and kept my glass filled with that while he drank the beers. The game was a bit scrappy, and at half-time still goalless, but Heitinga scored with a header just into the second half then on the hour Rafa van der Vaart netted to make the game, we thought, safe.

Throughout the second half Gillian, a bit bored, sat reading celeb gossip mags; I noticed Aisleyne mentioned on the front of her Love It! so drew attention to that, but I'd just begun trying to tell her I'm an Ais fan when she went into a mini-diatribe about her, none of it nice. Ah well, nobody's perfect.

Macedonia gave us a couple of anxious moments, not least when they pulled one back from the penalty spot, but the Oranje held on for the win.

I needed that.
