As part of the fall-out from the havoc wreaked by my shift pattern change on swaps I'd already agreed, I had to work today instead of tomorrow. Having done lates last night then stayed up past midnight for my mother's return, this morning I was in need of Red Bull.

About halfway through the shift Paula said to me "I like having you here." Since I changed my shifts, no-one else has yet occupied my seat next to her on Wednesdays. "It's a shame you're not doing Wednesdays any more," she added. I explained to her that I now do Tuesday evenings and I just couldn't handle Tuesday evening followed by Wednesday morning every week. "Perhaps you'll do some swaps," she smiled sadly.

Has she forgotten she still has the pleasure of my company on Thursdays?

At the beginning of the final hour, the sound of Portsmouth fans loudly chanting the Pompey Chimes rang out through our row. Linda asked me "Is that your phone?" Paula and Jan, like me, couldn't believe she didn't know I'm not a Portsmouth fan! It turned out to be Jane's phone - she was away from her booth. When she returned moments later she got loads of stick from the other girls - not least Paula, who said Jane's ringtone was "awful" (she likes Southampton).

To the Vodafone shop after work to collect my phone. The problem turned out to be with the software, so my phone's been reprogrammed with new software. That's made the display a bit different, and all the text messages I had in my inbox have been wiped, but all my contacts are still in situ - and at least all the buttons work.
