Aug. 31st, 2008 10:04 pmOff to Southampton for the Hawk girls' first league match, away to BTC Riverside. The bar there served a very nice St Helier pear cider.
The game was just five minutes old when the Riverside goalie went down in agony after taking a goal kick. It was clear she'd seriously hurt herself; unfortunately there was no stretcher at the club, so play had to be suspended until an ambulance came for her. Just as they'd got her into the ambulance, Billie's step-grandad had a blackout and collapsed. Thankfully it was only a few minutes before a second ambulance arrived for him. By the time we were ready to resume the game, play had been suspended for nearly an hour. The caretaker actually wanted the match abandoned, as he'd now have to stay on an extra hour to lock the place up after we finished, but the referee and both teams were all in favour of playing on so he gave way.
Hawks won 9-0. Jodie was sub because of hamstring trouble, but came on with 20 minutes to go and scored our eighth. Penny asked why I was calling Chantelle Sally and had to be told the story by Sabrina. Both Penny and Sabrina were frustrated at having to just watch because of their injuries; by contrast Sam, a sub, was desperately hoping not to have to play. She didn't. Alex, a half-time sub for Telé who'd aggravated her dodgy ankle, scored four. It rained on and off all afternoon - I was OK in my rain jacket, but the few umbrellas the rest of the Hawks contingent had were in very high demand - until 15 minutes from time an absolute downpour started and nearly all the spectators headed for the cover of the clubhouse. Naturally I stuck it out to the end.
From there it was on to Gosport Ice Rink to see Solent Devils take on the British Army Blades in a pre-season friendly. Not a bad game, and the Devils won 9-1 - a good sign for the season ahead, we hope. I'll certainly go watch them again, but with all the furore this week about him living locally, I wish they'd chosen a different piece of music instead of Gary Glitter's Rock 'n' Roll Part 2 to play when a goal was scored!
