Specsavers at lunch time for a routine eye test. I was kept waiting for a quarter of an hour, apparently because they were running behind schedule, before being given the test by a young Irish lady. A pleasant surprise - my eyesight has actually improved since two years ago, I'm less short-sighted now, so was given a prescription for new specs. She informed me that my right eyelid droops a little, but while it's not impairing my vision there'll be no need for treatment. With my Mastercard bill big enough already I made a bee-line for the £25 range - fortunately, there was a style I liked, and there's a 25% across-the-board discount at the moment so I get them for £17.25, plus the £19.50 test charge. Home in the pouring rain - then straight back out into it again as I recalled I still had to buy a pint of milk.

Driving lesson this afternoon. On the whole, much better this time. I just committed a couple of howlers: coming up onto the kerb a little going round one corner, and short-cutting round another, entering the road I was turning into on the right-hand side. I paid special attention to my junction routine, but forgot to go down to first a couple of times and still brought the car to a halt too early on two other occasions. Had a couple of goes at straight line reversing (hampered by regular traffic - Peter said with regret that all the local instructors used to use a 'lovely, very quiet road' for reversing but the residents complained) but still drift out. Peter says my main problem is steering - I'm still apparently using too much or too little, too early or too late - and consistency. Having done a perfect junction and turn once every so often, "we're looking for that every time".
