Dec. 4th, 2007 10:00 pmWork this morning, on a swap with Rachel whose daughter's Nativity play is today. Arrived in the telephone unit to see a host of Christmas paper chains on the ceiling - clearly some of the ladies came in first thing to put them up. Good on you, girls.
At 8.55, when I was still getting my headset out of my box, Vanessa had already bagged Rachel's booth (so she could sit next to Amanda and spend massive chunks of the morning having a good Doris). I asked Marilyn, the duty supervisor, if she could find me a free booth, and after voicing her displeasure at Vanessa hopping in, she directed me towards 82, where her plan said Vanessa ought to be. I made my way there - to find it occupied by Louise #2. So I trooped back over to Marilyn, who advised me to sit in 89 (Louise's designated booth). I was just starting to hang up my coat in the chair there when Vanessa called out "Julie sits there."
"Does she?"
"Yes, she always sits there on Mondays and Tuesdays."
I wasn't in the mood to trudge back to Marilyn a third time, and as it seemed to me that Vanessa had decided it was her, and not the supervisors' list, who determined who sat where, I simply said to Vanessa "Where can I go?" She pointed me to a booth in the opposite row saying "That one's free."
Janine, sitting in Vanessa and Julie's row, actually asked a little later what I was doing in that booth, so I told her Vanessa had hopped in mine. Janine clearly wanted to intervene, but by now it was 9 am and I was finally switching on a workstation ready to begin so I said I was OK. Soon afterwards, Marilyn came over and asked me if I was all right sitting there. I don't think she was too pleased that a few of the girls had unilaterally chucked her seating plan out of the window.
We had a briefing at 2.10 so I pick up an extra half-hour's pay.
Home to find a package waiting for me from Big Issue South West. We in the Portsmouth area are sitting on a floating boundary when it comes to the Big Issue - some weeks our sellers have the London edition, other weeks they get the Bristol-centric South West edition. It would make much more sense if we got the London one all the time, like we used to until recently - people round here, when they want to go further afield than Southampton for a big-city outing such as a theatre show, almost always head for London. Nobody down our way has the slightest affinity with Bristol. Today, though, I had cause to be grateful for us getting the South West issue three weeks ago, as I'd won the DVD of Rumble Fish, in one of the three competitions I entered in that week's edition. I only wish I'd won the Shameless DVD instead, though...
Breezed through my Spreadsheets exam at college tonight. Pathenia was amazed I did it in less than half an hour - when I handed her back the exam paper and memory stick and my printout she exclaimed "Wow!" While I was relaxing in the canteen with FourFourTwo and a coffee after completing my exam, the canteen absolutely filled up. Back in the IT suite, Pathenia reckoned the school was having a fancy dress party tonight. Onward to Concepts in Information Technology...
