Salute to the England ladies' team, who've just held the mighty Germans to a 0-0 draw. Like commentator Lucy Ward I find it hard to pick a man of the match, but I'm going to give my nod jointly to Rachel Brown and Casey Stoney, who both foiled a lot of dangerous goal attempts during the second half.

We just need to beat Argentina by two on Monday to be sure of getting to the quarters. Go for it, girls.

Funnily enough friends and relatives always reckoned I should have been a lawyer. I was in fact offered a place at Liverpool University to study law - provided I got two Bs and a C. Alas, I failed Maths, so it was History at Queen Mary College, London for me, followed by 15 years as a general dogsbody...
