Nice quiet shift at work, if it did drag a bit - but made most agreeable by the large pack of choc chip cookies on the nibbles table. As I was coding out one interview, I heard Rosemary, sitting opposite me, bemoaning that, with intermarriage, in a couple of generations' time there'll be no 'pure bred English' left. Beryl and I pointed out that we white English people are of mixed descent anyway, as we're all a mixture of Roman, Celt, Viking, Saxon and Norman (without mentioning the many immigrants from continental Europe who've arrived since). Beryl said her surname probably made her a Viking, so I mentioned that my male line ancestors were Scots-Irish. "An interesting mixture," said Rosemary, so I explained to her what Scots-Irish means. She asked if I'd ever traced my family tree on that side. Much to her amusement I replied that I'd been unable to, as the IRA burned down the Dublin records office in 1921.

To the Thorngate in the early evening to give blood. This time I was called by the finger prick lady quite soon after checking in, and got my call to donate soon after. When Jo, my nurse, asked if I'd had a problem on previous donations, I said they'd had trouble finding a vein the last couple of times. She seemed to find one without any trouble. When I'd been giving for a while Alison, another nurse, told Jo I'd put on a spurt and was nearly finished.

Rested on the bed for just a couple of minutes when I was finished, then felt ready to amble over to the refreshment table for a cup of water (they had no hot drinks today) and a Club and sit reading FourFourTwo for a little while.

From there, I wandered around for a few minutes, to kill time before the political party meeting I was due to attend, also in the Thorngate, began half an hour later. After a while, one of the staff asked "Can I help you?" I explained I was passing time and she strongly urged me to go to the cafe. So more FourFourTwo over a cup of coffee.

The meeting started late and dragged a little, but at least I made it home for Who Do You Think You Are?
