On Capital Gold right now, David Jensen is running through the Top 20 of New Year's Eve 1985 and talking to the Pet Shop Boys, who were #1 that week with 'West End Girls'. At #7 was one of my favourites at the time, 'Girlie Girlie' by Sophia George. It was great hearing that again - and the chorus even still sounded like 'You're just a flashy curly wurly' - but halfway through, the song was suddenly cut short. In crashed an advert, then we moved on to the #6, Madonna's Dress You Up.

I was just going to say none of the other songs on the countdown had been butchered in this way, but as I type they've just done it to the #4, Hit That Perfect Beat by Bronski Beat.

And yet they found time before the Top 20 rundown started to play songs that were well on the slide down the Top 40 by that week. They should surely have been the ones to be truncated, or left out altogether so we could enjoy the Top 20 in all its glory. Where's the sense in playing everything else in full and cutting off two of the top ten??

As Nan Taylor would say, "What a fucking liberty!"

I don't think I've ever heard the Sophia George song, but Flashy Curly Wurly sounds like a lot more fun.

Merry Christmas! :)
