eiffel_71Went to Fareham Town’s Cams Alders ground last night, a rare admission for an AFC Portchester fan. In my defence, the ground was being used by Fleetlands FC, one of my local clubs, for their Wessex League Cup tie with Blackfield & Langley.
Arriving at the ground I spotted a couple of Fleetlands people and went over to say hello. One of them turned out to be Iain, the club chairman. In the course of our conversation I mentioned that I’d been turnstile man for Buckingham Town and he said “I’m sure we can find you a volunteer role or three”. I had to let him down gently and just say I can’t guarantee coming to every home game. As it was the second time in as many weeks that Fleetlands had switched a midweek home game to another ground, I asked Iain whether there was a problem with the floodlights at Powder Monkey Park. He said there was a problem with the generator.
I asked Iain if they’d be putting the Lionesses game on in the Fleetlands clubhouse after Saturday’s match and he agreed. I said the game would last till 6.30 and he said the bar staff would be there till about nine.
The Fareham clubhouse was nice enough, Natalie the barmaid was friendly and they served Rekorderligs and a couple of Powder Monkey beers. The burgers from the tea hut were quite tasty with lashings of relish.
An exciting end-to-end game finished 3-3. With no extra time in this competition it was straight to penalties. Both teams scored their opening kicks. Fleetlands’ goalkeeper took their second penalty and sent his counterpart the wrong way. Blackfield’s second kicker missed and all the remain8ng penalties were scored to give Fleetlands the win.
Home to hit the hay.
