Went to the Oktoberfest at the Black Lion last night. The beer garden at the back was transformed into an authentic Biergarten festooned with Bavarian flags and bunting, complete with frauleins in full costume taking beer orders at your table. I tried a few German beers I'd not previously known, all excellent especially the Weihenstephan Kristall. The ticket price included a plate of Bavarian pork stew and a Thuringian Rostbratwurst in a hot dog roll, with sauerkraut and dill slices on self service.

We were entertained through the evening by an Oompah band clad in lederhosen, calling themselves Little Willi, Herman the German and Helmut van Grosswinkel. They played a wide selection of party songs, and urged the punters into participation on a few numbers, such as doing the conga, jumping up and down, and doing actions to The Music Man. To my delight, Sit Down, American Pie and Living Next Door To Alice were included.

It was a good evening but I felt the effects of the late night and the German beer this morning.

Weihenstephan brewery is in Freising and one we've visited. Probably the oldest brewery in Germany (13th century) and certainly the oldest in Bavaria.
