Although I won't be taking an interest in the men's World Cup, I do know that blood stocks are always needed when major sporting events are imminent, so travelled to Luton this morning to donate. I even tweeted, and posted on Facebook, the hashtag #BleedForEngland .

Arrived with a couple of hours before my appointment so headed for a takeaway for a tasty portion of chicken rice, then sat on a bench and messaged the girl Jane suggested I contact. She did come up with a couple of perfunctory suggestions - talk to a friend, write down my emotions - but kept emphasising how "I'm not a professional". It seemed pointless to tell her that Jane had recommended her because I can't afford a professional.

Managed to kill a decent amount of time in Costa over a bottle of water reading Another Bloody Saturday.

Had no problems at the donor centre right up until the insertion. The nurse said she'd had the vein just before she put the needle in, but by the time of the insertion it was gone. Giving up, she said "I think your donating days are over." I asked why and she said my veins aren't up to it any more. The sister came over, asked if I was all right. I said no. She said that with my veins so hard to pin down, they didn't want to risk puncturing muscle or an artery. "We won't be having you back again."

32 and out. Absolutely gutted.

They were kind enough to invite me to go for a drink and biscuits anyway. I sat there for a while drinking water and eating Club biscuits and crisps, taking it all in. One nurse, who didn't know, said as I left "Thank you, see you again."

I left the place to trudge back to the station interchange, completely drained.

With all this Notts County women's stuff that's been going on, this last fortnight I'm not coping. Being a regular blood donor was something to cling to. And now that's gone.

There was at least a bus to Leighton about to leave.

Despite not getting to actually donate, I was still unable to drink or do anything exertious for the rest of the day. Spent the rest of the afternoon surfing YouTube and failing to get hold of a couple of friends on the phone. Watched Shrek 2 and The Big Job on telly this evening. Got All Girls Live At The Apollo on now.

Hoping I find someone to lead me to the light of something to help me cope, soon. (Definitely not the 'just shrug it off' approach. Never going to happen.)

In the meantime I can only will the hands of time round to 12th August and the England Legends game when I can get back where I belong. Enjoying women's football.

I feel so badly for you. I don't understand the vein thing. I am a registered venipuncturist myself, and the reason people's veins are hard to puncture sometimes is for various reasons - sometimes the person doing it isn't competent at that time - or it could be that a medication the donor is taking is shrinking the veins, or causing low blood pressure which will do that as well. Also, being dehydrated will do it but that wasn't the problem in your case because you'd had water and food. I would try again next month or so, if I were you. Please don't give up because one person said so. You can't believe all the people all the time. *hugs*

I'm also sorry it's taken me so long to get back to DW and reading posts!
