On my way out of work yesterday afternoon, someone called out to me from the canteen. It was the lovely Julieann, busy writing Christmas cards and waiting for her shift on the telephone unit to start. I went over to sit on the sofa with her, we had a good chat about Christmas preparations and plans, and she said how she missed me being around on the TU. We agreed it was a shame we now don't see each other with working different hours. Julieann revealed that she's putting in plenty of extra shifts to bring a few quid in, and that her marriage broke up earlier this year but she's feeling fine now. We parted with a massive hug and peck on the cheek, wishing each other a Merry Christmas, and she seemed amenable to the idea of us meeting up more in the New Year...

Last night was the Hawks Ladies' Christmas function at the Harvester on Eastern Road. I managed to get a bus that travels along totally the wrong part of the Eastern Road, and finally found the place after a fairly long walk and a phone call to Dick! Thankfully everyone was still having preliminary drinks when I arrived. Dick and Leon broke the news to me that a friendly had been arranged, away to Southampton WFC on 2 January - kick-off 11am! Finding the starting point for the queue around the salad bar, which was circular, was a puzzle, but all round the food was very good. I went for a well done sirloin steak with onion rostis and red wine and shallot sauce, followed by a 'Sundae Best' (ice cream with Belgian chocolate sauce). I was at a table with Dick, Trev, Leon and Pete; we talked tactics, highlights of the season so far, and Leon's years living in France where he played semi-pro footie while working as an entertainer.

From there we went down the road to the Farmhouse where a karaoke night was in process. The Greene King IPA pump was empty (boo!) but there was a rather good real ale called Rockin' Rudolph. Everyone expected Charley, our karaoke queen, to be first to take the stage, but Trev, Leon and Pete had that honour, doing Oasis' Don't Look Back In Anger. It wasn't long before Charley sang Kelly Clarkson's Since You Been Gone. Then several of the girls asked what I was going to sing. I'd already mentioned to some of them in the pub that if karaoke was on the agenda, this being Christmas, I was a Shane MacGowan in waiting, hoping that a Kirsty MacColl would step forth from among the girls. A couple of them tried to get Jenna to do it with me, but she insisted she couldn't sing, then Vicky suggested Stacie, my duet partner from the end-of-season party last May. Stacie said she didn't know all the words, but I reminded her they'd be on the screen so she agreed. A few more got called before us, then we were on to a massive cheer from the girls. I did my passable Shane imitation, and Stacie was brilliant - she had hints of Kirsty's voice and every bit of her feistiness! Several of the bar patrons complimented us on our performance as we moved away from the stage. We returned to the girls' table to a chorus chanting my name, so Charley and I got them to chant for Stacie.

From then on, while some of the girls hit the dance floor or played pool, the rest of us spent the rest of the night chilling out, drinking and singing along with Christmas songs whenever anyone sang one. After Trev's brave assault on We Didn't Start The Fire, aborted near the end when the lyric screen froze, the girls went on nightclubbing while we older guys wended our way home. In the car park Leon said he should have brought his guitar, and I told him he'd have to do a little set for us at the end-of-season do.

RIP Kirsty, 10 years today, always in our hearts and minds xxxx
