Today Bev, Chris and Demelza were sharing stories about their husbands monopolising their family TVs to watch the World Cup. Bev asked how Ghana, her sweepstake team, are doing; I told her they'd beaten Serbia 1-0. As Demelza got Serbia, that drew moaning from her, including her wanting to know "Who picked them for me?" (the sweep was drawn while she was off sick). When Bev pointed to her homemade Ghanaian flag, Demelza, the only one in our block still without one, demanded "Where's mine?" So I chivalrously made her a Serbian flag - once Bev and I had explained to her that the defeat to Ghana didn't mean Serbia had been knocked out.

The girls find their partners', and my, telly football addiction amusing while also pitying us, but they perfectly understood my knocking off early today to get home for Spain v Switzerland as the Spanish are my sweepstake team. "Enjoy the game, you've nothing to worry about," Lin said to me as I said goodbye. Everyone was so sure Spain would win, as was I...then they got their asses whupped by the Swiss!
