Our retiring head of section invited us all down to the Map Room to say a farewell to him this afternoon. There were pics of him at various times in the last 30 years at home, at work and at leisure posted on the walls, and his successor made a tribute speech complete with slide show, at the end of which we drank a toast, and our outgoing boss replied with a goodbye address. There was a well-stocked buffet table, and almost every beverage you could think of - including some rather strong vino: Demelza and I were both tiddly on one glass each.
After our retiring boss had stopped for a little informal chat with the group I was standing with, Matt heard Sue asking me about my plans for following the World Cup and joined in. "Five days to the first game, isn't it?" he asked.
"Four," I answered, but before I'd got all the word out I realised he was talking about England's opening game. Hoping he wasn't one of those people who'll only watch the England matches, I casually mentioned that I'll be tuning in to as many games as the demands of work and holiday allow. I think I sold him on the idea of watching some other games when he agreed that France v Uruguay on Friday night should be a good 'un.
Demelza asked me if I'd arranged any time off for watching the tournament, so I said I'd booked next Monday as flex to see Netherlands v Denmark, explaining that my affinity lies with the Oranje. Unsurprisingly, she asked why, so I told her how the 1978 side had won my heart when I was a nipper.
Later, back in the office, Ray asked if anyone was doing a World Cup sweepstake. Someone had actually brought that up at the buffet and Sue had said she hadn't known of anyone planning one; I relayed that on to Ray, who reckoned the section at the other end of our floor were doing one so we ought to. He said he'd work on Liz to get one going...
