eiffel_71Stayed up to see Amy receive her gold medal at 3 am, so was pretty panda-eyed when I got up to travel to Basingstoke for the Hawks Ladies' Hampshire Cup semi-final.
The match was being played in a suburb called Winklebury. As the football pitch there is the headquarters of the Hampshire FA, I was expecting some fairly swish facilities. No such luck - not even an indoor lounge to sit in. The sole bright spot, given the wintry weather, was that there was a covered stand. So with an hour and a half to kill before kick-off I made my way down the road to the Winkle pub, where some guys at the bar were talking appreciatively of Amy's victory. They had a real ale called King John on offer, a new one on me but a pretty good pint.
Back at the pitch, there was a blast from the past watching the girls train - Jade, Hawks Ladies ex-player and daughter of our former physio Lisa. Caught up with her - she's only playing for her Uni at the moment as she has to work weekends to top her student loan up.
The pitch was an absolute pudding. Basingstoke set out to contain our girls, and managed it for 35 minutes, then Charley scored two in quick succession, and in the second half Leeta headed home a cross to put the tie to bed. Seeing Vanessa, the Portsmouth manager, at half-time I rightly guessed that their semi with Aldershot had been rained off, so we have to wait another week to find out who we meet in the final.
