Went to the King's Head in Wickham last night for our extended family Christmas meal. Unfortunately we hadn't been provided with one massive long table for the evening but had to spread ourselves across several of the tables as they lay, so I was hived off with my mother and my gran on a little side table for three.

The food, though, was first class. For starter I'd gone for French bread with olive oil and balsamic vinegar to dip in, then for main course an excellent home made lamb burger with home fries. The pub served Kopparberg, but, alas, I'd cracked open an Oakleaf Pompey Royal during Gillette Soccer Saturday, and mixing for me is never a good idea, so I spent the evening on London Pride. Plenty of them.

Between courses we wandered around the tables mingling. I got to have a chat with my cousin Neil about his busy Christmas work schedule, and a quick word with Deano who was in a great mood as he and young son Louis had been to see Pompey's 2-0 win over Burnley in the afternoon. His mother Ann shared with me the story of how Deano, working in the boatyard, fell in the drink two weeks ago. His wasn't the most talked-about mishap, though; that honour went to my cousin Lil falling down the steps at her local pub last weekend. She got ribbed about the fact a young man she fancied was present at the time, and my cousin Jacqui regretted that no-one had filmed it for You've Been Framed.

More than one person was asking about my driving test; they didn't remember the date so I reminded them it was the 30th. While, given my snafu that morning, this was chronic timing for that subject, my cousin Annie was pretty nice about it and we had a long talk towards the end of the evening, mostly about Christmas plans. When I mentioned that I was going to Birmingham to see the Pogues she was surprised they were still playing live, but said she'd love to see them. What a shame I didn't know that a few months ago.

Raging hangover this morning.

Sounds like a nice family gathering, despite the cockup about the tables.
