First day of the season. Back to Westleigh Park, the Kopparberg and the smell of chips from the tea hut. Arrived early to get a couple of 'bergs in before kick off; as I strolled into the car park Trev shouted down to me from the top of the metal staircase by the high hut, asking if I'd text the goals in to the Non League Vidiprinter this season.

Steph was sitting at the bar with Edge and a couple of the others. Joined them for a quaff and a chat until just after 2.30, when I made my way into the ground to buy the new Hawks shirts from the club shop. At least that was the plan; the only one they had in XL was the new third kit, in Inter Milan style blue and black, so I had to settle for just that one. The new shop lady (the club have taken over running the shop from Simon and Malc) said she hoped they'd have more stock of the other two for the Bath match Monday week. On the bright side that left enough dosh on me to pay Malc for my seat on the coach to mong land (Weymouth) on Bank Holiday Monday.

Got the info on texting the vidiprinter from Trev, but there were no spare team sheets - the printer had run out of ink - so a press man lent me his spare pen to copy the teams from his pad. It's simpler this year, I only have to text in goals and sendings-off - they get attendances and full times from the Press Association now.

All the talk on the forum over the past weeks and in the bar beforehand had been of the need for Hawks to make a good start to the season to keep floating fans interested. Unfortunately the message didn't seem to have got through to the lads on the pitch. Hawks' performance, especially in the first half, was terribly laboured, and Manny and Muzzy had several chances to shoot but opted for sideways passes which led to nothing. On 26 minutes Thurrock took the lead and Hawks had no reply.

We improved a bit after the break, Wes Fogden netted a well taken goal twelve minutes into the second half, and late in the game sub Sam Pearce unleashed a shot that we thought had gone in but was actually cleared on the line. Aaron Howe made a couple of super saves and we can probably thank him for escaping with a point.

Back to the bar for the final scores and another drink with Steph.

It's always exciting when a new season is about to start...you're always so positive and nothing can get you in a bad mood...when the season is on the way and the losses are coming it's not that fun anymore though hehe.
