To Ferneham Hall this evening for the Gosport Amateur Operatic Society's production of Oliver. Natalie Quantick was the star of the show; her Nancy was perfect. Andrew Wilcock, a very funny Fagin, was another stand-out and Tom Vale was a superb, very sinister Bill Sykes. Louise Skinner gave a fine portrayal of Mrs Sowerberry and her husky Marlene Dietrich singing voice brought a new dimension to That's Your Funeral. Some of the other performances were a little hit and miss but overall the show was energetic and engaging.
At the interval Tessa came over to say hello and, yet again, remarked on my not having 'brought' my mother (a hark-back to the mayoral year). I explained I've been flying solo for eighteen months now; Tessa said "I know, but do try and persuade her to come along to our shows." I said I'd do my best to sell their next performance, The Gondoliers, to her.
I also bumped into Amanda, once of my office and still of the Lee Players, and her husband. We chatted about their play in a fortnight's time (alas, she isn't in it, just front of house and prompter), how work is since she left (same old same-old), and her new job at Crofton community centre. As we said our goodbyes before going back into the auditorium, she said they were waiting for her daughter to get back from the bar.
"Is that the one who does Catherine Tate impressions?" I asked.
"She doesn't do Catherine Tate impressions. She just is Lauren!"
After the show I mingled with some of the cast and crew in the bar. When I told Louise I'd enjoyed her number and added "You have a very Marlene Dietrich singing voice," she looked perturbed. Maybe she didn't hear me properly? Or she didn't take that as a compliment? She perked up when I said goodbye and wished her well for the last two shows tomorrow.
