The last thing I needed was me ma having a pop at me before I left for work this morning. She is going through very heavy family stuff at the moment, but that's no excuse for getting angry at me for feeling fed up. Anyone would have felt fed up in my shoes with my wretched phone breaking and my dad ripping into me last night. I think subconsciously she thought I was making a bid to take the Stress Gold Medal away from her.

Roll on next March when I can seek full-time employment, the first step to leaving this house.

Phoned Vodafone customer care before going on shift. Spoke to someone who actually seemed to know what she was doing, and told me to take my phone to a Vodafone shop and hand it in for repair and I'd be given a loan phone while it was away. I sat down and wrote down every number in my phone's memory just in case they get lost in transit.

Talked to Catty the librarian, who was sympathetic. Went on the phones feeling thoroughly pissed off. At least the only person who aggravated me was one rude woman who I didn't have to speak to for more than half a minute.

And so to the Vodafone shop in Fareham after work. Of course, nothing is ever as simple as promised with that outfit : the girl who served me, a trainee, said I wasn't entitled to a courtesy phone as I didn't have insurance. She did say I could add insurance to my account now for £6.95 a month and would only have to keep it for three months, and then I could have a courtesy phone. I readily agreed. Just as well, as my own phone won't be back until September 8. I was standing around like a suet pudding for 20 minutes while the girl got all the paperwork and work on her VDU screen and the courtesy phone sorted out, and being a trainee she regularly had to turn to her colleague, who thus had to deal with both me and her own customer simultaneously, for advice. It didn't help that for the second half of that 20 minutes I had the urge to visit the jacks. When the experienced girl told the trainee to input "the number of the courtesy phone" I had a nightmare vision of a week and a half's worth of calls and messages not reaching me. Thankfully, my courtesy phone answers to my own number.

On my way out of the shop a man came up beside me, said my name and said "I don't think you remember me." He added "It's been 25 years" so I mentioned one of my old schools. He wasn't from that particular school, but when he mentioned the name of Mrs M 1, my old maths teacher, I knew straight away it was Boris, another of my old maths teachers. He'd been the experienced girl's customer for most of the 20 minutes in the shop, and recognised my voice and my name. We had a brief chat - he's retired now - then he said his goodbyes and I made for the Gents. From there it was on to Boots to replenish my supply of Benadryl Plus, then I just made the bus station in time for the 3.35 82.
