Hawks v Basingstoke at Westleigh Park, still looking for our first win. What had been looking like a dull plodder of a game was transformed on 24 minutes when Matt Gray hit a beautiful strike from the wing into the top corner of the net. Hawks played conservatively for the rest of the first half and went in still 1-0 up. Seven minutes after the restart Brett Poate made it two with a thunderbolt from the edge of the box bang in front of goal; almost straight away Basingstoke gave away a penalty and Luke Nightingale made no mistake from the spot.
Even with us 3-0 up some of the old guys around me will always find an excuse to moan; when Luke was substituted by Jamie Slabber, one of them said "That's replacing Barbie with Ken."
We all thought Slabs had scored our fourth when he struck a long low diagonal shot into the goal, but the ref didn't see it cross the line so allowed play to continue when the Basingstoke keeper kicked back out to a defender. Number four wasn't long in coming; Jamie Collins floated in a high cross which the goalie touched with his hand as it sailed overhead but the ball curved into the net regardless. Trevor never likes to give own goals, so on the PA he credited the goal to JC (I'm sure the keeper won't object).
In the 85th minute Hawks went nap. Charlie Henry, on as sub, floated a thirty-yarder from the wing over the keeper and into the far corner. When announcing the goal Trevor added "A contender for Goal of the Season" - rather early, but right then no Hawks fan would have disagreed. Basingstoke nicked a consolation from an injury-time corner, but this was the performance we'd been waiting for - the one the team needed to deliver. Now onwards and upwards - please.
