Went up to Andover to see the Hawk girls' friendly with Andover New Street last night. As my taxi pulled away from the train station, the driver asked if I was going to a ladies' football match.
"Yes, my team Havant & Waterlooville Ladies are playing a friendly there."
"Can you contact your ladies? I think I've sent some of them to the wrong ground."
He had indeed - Abi, Amy, Penny, Sophie and Alex, for it was they, had asked him directions, but they'd said they were playing "Andover Ladies" and so he'd directed them to a local leisure centre where the team of that name play. "If they'd said New Street I'd have given them the right directions."
As soon as I arrived at the ground I tipped Lisa off. As kick-off drew nearer with no sign of the wayward quintet, Rob revised his team selection to make them all subs so the others could get changed and be ready on time, while Abi phoned Lisa to tell her where they were. Lisa ended up handing the phone to born and bred Andoverian Erin, who directed them the rest of the way.
Alas, New Street have got rid of the big screen in the clubhouse now, but there was still a telly on a high shelf enabling all us punters to keep up with the Olympic highlights over our Magners.
The missing fivesome showed up with 10 minutes to spare. Travelling with them was Jade, who joined Chelsea, Laura and Sabrina, all carrying injuries picked up on Sunday, and Sam, who's not yet match fit as work's kept her away from training, on the sidelines.
In pouring rain Hawks won 5-1, Sally opening the scoring with a sublime chip shot that the other girls inevitably insisted was a cross and Telé grabbing a magnificent hat-trick. Jo and Michelle came out for the second half wearing different shirts. "Jo's got no number on," observed Jade. "Jo and Mich have both changed their shirts," I said. "'Cause they're wet," Sam added, prompting Laura to remark "They want to feel each other's moisture."
As the players were celebrating after Jenna F scored our fourth on the hour, Jade approached me at pitchside and said "Let's have a sing-song", but after one chorus each of 'Eskimo Jen' and 'We are the Hawks' had Sam, who'd been standing next to Jade, running for the covered area in front of the clubhouse, Jade abandoned singing to join her and the other sidelined girls. I couldn't blame her as they were having some real crazy banter the whole time, some about footie and music festivals but much of it about their and the other Hawk girls' drunken exploits and/or sexual adventures!
They still serve top post-match chips in the clubhouse, though Lisa wasn't amused that Rob, Dick, Trev and I all helped ourselves (in my case, not before being invited by Dick) before many of the girls had got their portions. If left to take the train, I'd have been arriving in Fareham at 12.45 am; fortunately Dick had driven up alone so was able to offer me a lift.
Sat up until 2.30 am watching Olympics so was absolutely knackered at work this morning. Kept my peepers open through the shift thanks to three cups of Caffe Mocha.
Big up to top babe Heather Fell on her splendid silver.
