At the top of the shift Sue #5 approached me and said "I believe congratulations are in order." Thankfully she straight away explained what she meant: she was talking about my getting my ECDL. It felt strange being congratulated on that two months after the event, but it turned out the new edition of the staff e-newsletter came out today, with my passing the ECDL included in the news. I got congrats from Sandi and Cathy before the evening was over.
Someone left a plastic tub full of Maoam strips, wine gums and one liquorice allsort in the lounge area. I was tempted, but was good and didn't touch them.
Finally got to check my e-mail tonight! It included a message from Pat, with the subject 'Pseudonym'. A few weeks ago we were told in a staff meeting that we could register false names for us to use when introducing ourselves on the phone if for any reason we didn't want to give our real names (for example if the respondent was a person from my past). Soon after, I saw Sue #5 and asked to register 'Jack de Manio' as my pseudonym.
Today's mail from Pat was to say that senior management had ruled my choice out, as they had decided not to allow names of famous people past or present. It came as a total surprise to me that people in senior management were aware of the famous Jack de Manio, as I'd been sure anyone who'd heard of him would have to be above retirement age now. The e-mail ended with an instruction to either always use my real name or register a 'non-prominent alternative'.
So I went over to Sue with my new choice - a name that features once, obscurely, in a forgotten 1970s children's novel.
