Hawks Ladies away to Burnham. This time I was assigned to Trev's car with Dick. We stopped at a Sainsbury's somewhere in Surrey for lunch - I went for a whole chicken roasted in lemon and extra virgin olive oil. As soon as I took the chicken out of the bag Trev complained that I was going to stink the car out. (It was Trev's idea for us to eat on the move rather than sit in the car park.) Very tasty, but also very filling - I was well stuffed for the rest of the day.
We expected a tough game, as Burnham had given us in our home game, and we got one. Although we created several chances, Burnham's resistance held out until just before half time when one of their defenders turned a cross from Sam into her own net. In the second half Sam was dragged to the floor in the penalty box and made the points safe from the spot. Not a great game, but job done. The girls now need one win from their last two games to secure promotion.
Good craic in the bar after. When Billie looked at Laura's pint and asked her "Is that a half?", her election as Dick of the Day was assured. As the girls' next game is next Sunday, I dropped just the odd mention that that's my birthday. Lisa remembered they'd won promotion on my birthday last year, I said how great it would be to do it for the second year in a row and several of the girls began talking about it being a good omen. Here's hoping.
I hadn't bothered setting the video for the Spanish Grand Prix as I'd been sure that I wouldn't be able to avoid hearing the result during the day. As it turned out, I could easily have avoided it. The TV in the Burnham clubhouse was tuned to ITV4, which showed British Touring Cars then Minder, and the barmaid knew nothing about the result. Bernadette, bless her, got the top three from her mobile for me - 1 Raikkonen, 2 Massa, 3 Hamilton. I knew straight away that I hadn't missed anything by not taping the race, as the guys in red's one-two would have knocked BMW from the top of the constructor's championship. Trev also kept his car radio tuned to stations playing the Hit 40 UK, so I wouldn't have heard any result spoilers on there either. Got home to learn the only things to remotely smile about, apart from Lewis' podium spot, were Kubica and Coulthard coming 4th and 5th.
Ah well, the girls did me proud so mustn't be greedy.
