This afternoon Gosport Borough’s match with Yate Town was the only game in the region not to succumb to a waterlogged pitch. Just as I entered the ground the heavens opened. After paying the programme seller, my prog got rained on when I rested it on my bag on the floor to fumble for change for a 50/50 draw ticket. The programme lady kindly swapped it for a dry one, which went straight into my bag under the cover of the roof.

With my foot still swollen and pain spasms still coming, in the bar I went for a tonic water and lime, since my pal Paul had recommended tonic water for gout with its quinine content. Not a bad little tipple. Another Paul - Paul from Fleetlands - was in the clubhouse and I joined him for a quick catch-up chat while most of the people in the bar watched the end of the Manchester derby on the big screens.

Alas, Only Rolls And Sauces is no more. The hut it occupied is now called Four-Four-Tea and dispenses a limited range of snacks and drinks. Jock’s Snack Bar, though, has a new menu courtesy of a partnership with the town’s Bap & Burrito Bar, including nachos, dirty dogs and dirty fries. I tried some BBQ pulled pork dirty fries, quite tasty.

Before kick-off the tannoy man thanked the ground staff for their hard work yesterday and today in ensuring this was the only game in the area on today. Borough got a penalty just before the quarter hour but Brett Williams’ strike was saved by the goalie.

When the half-times were read out, Everton being 1-0 up against Southampton got a cheer - presumably several Pompey fans had joined us for the day for a local football fix.

On 52 minutes a Yate striker was left unmarked in the box and gave the visitors the lead. Gosport got another penalty soon after; Abdulai Baggie took this one - and it too was saved. On the hour Danny Hollands of Gosport made a tackle that brought down an opponent and left him needing attention. The spectators around me thought he won the ball cleanly, but the ref didn’t agree and brandished his red card. Danny left the pitch after a little chat from a fellow player, but Borough’s director of football Mark Molesley vociferously remonstrated with the official - and was given his marching orders too. After dragging his feet and continuing to argue his point with anyone nearby, Mark eventually headed for the stand and play resumed.

Borough created several chances in the closing stages but all were blazed over the bar. A fan next to me in the Gents lamented “This is a hard watch now”. Seven minutes of time added on failed to yield an equaliser. The final whistle blew with Gosport empty-handed, drawing a few boos from the fans behind the goal.
