Have been suffering gout since the 3rd. Almost a week of Naproxen reduced the pain but there’s still some swelling there and I’m still getting pain spasms so I’m on the Colchicine.

Yesterday was Sue’s birthday and she invited me to Arty’s for dinner. One of the others there, Michelle, had met me before; she was convinced I’d been at the same senior school as her and Sue but I assured her I hadn’t. That confused her as she wasn’t sure where she knew me from, until we established that we had another mutual friend as well as Sue. The rest were strangers to me but we all got on OK. One of them, John, seemed a bit of an eccentric; from time to time he kept raising glasses to me and putting out his hand for me to shake. Vicky, next to him, reckoned he was male bonding, as he and I were the only men at a table full of ladies. Sue was delighted with the England Rugby calendar I gave her, kissing the pic of one of the players on the front page.

The food was first class, as befitting the upmarket prices. I went for pulled pork doughballs for starter; the menu designated them as a sharer, so I asked Tracy if she wanted to come in with me on a helping, but Tracy said the portions weren’t enough to serve two. She ordered different doughballs. Nadine explained that Tracy isn’t a sharer. In the event the doughballs portions were pretty generous.

For main I went for an excellent chicken burger in a pretzel bun, with posh fries - fries tossed in Parmesan, truffle oil and parsley - with a side order of garlic bread. We all talked about holiday plans and the joys of house sharing while Sue sympathised with me about drinking lemonade because of my lingering gout, and the ladies indulged themselves with cocktails, the appearance of which they seemed to find amusing, and had fun and games with the straws.

I was the only one who went for a dessert (a delicious chocolate and coconut cheesecake); the others all said they were full. John had already paid the whole bill on his bank card so we all sorted him out cash for our shares, then we said our goodbyes.
