When We Was Fab
Jun. 18th, 2020 05:20 pmThis week E4 are showing classic episodes from the Channel 4 era of Big Brother.
I was a devoted fan of that show for its first 7 seasons. Then I became rather brutally disillusioned, and after that I never watched another Channel 4 BB. Indeed, I only bothered with the Channel 5 ones when they were celebrity editions with someone I liked on them.
But on Sunday night seeing a classic episode from BB1 brought back some great memories. Back when the show was fresh and new and exciting, when I fell in love with Anna Nolan, when I joined a fan e-group devoted to her, an e-group that lasted for years, that we had some great times chatting on, through which I made some great friends - some of whom I'm still in touch with now. It was bitter-sweet that the episode chosen was the one where Nick's scheming was exposed; while it's always gratifying to see a rulebreaker get his just deserts, on the other hand it was Craig's confronting of Nick that cemented him as that year's winner. Without that, maybe Anna might have won.
Tuesday night put me through the whole cocktail of emotions. An episode of BB7, one of the series where my fandom was deepest, and the series that brought my whole fandom tumbling down. As an Aisleyne fan, it was a delight to see an episode that showed her in a superb light, and lovely to see her today as a talking head looking back on the events shown. And yet, it couldn't help but also bring back my outrage at the producers' treatment of Aisleyne that series, putting her through the emotional wringer and pulling out the stops to try to deny her a podium finish. It was gratifying to find several fellow Aisleyne fans now tweeting the same sentiments as me; I got in a tweet calling out the producers' behaviour in depriving her of her deserved silver medal, and calling out Stinkwort Sharon Powers in particular. And yes, I still want Ms Powers' giblets on a silver platter.
It emerged that part of Endemol's agenda at the time was that a lot of their staff had placed BETS on Pete, Glyn and Nikki being the top three. There's some comfort knowing that they all lost their money.
After that roller coaster ride, yesterday was my mother's birthday. I got her the next novel she needed in Lilian Harry's Burracombe series. My aunts and my cousin Gayle all dropped by, to leave her presents and chat at a suitable distance in the garden, then we had chicken, sweet chilli and veg stir-fry for dinner, followed by a film, Snowballs, nibbles and cakes.
