We Have A Dream
Apr. 18th, 2019 09:50 pmTo Aveley yesterday for the Isthmian League Women's Cup Final. The outside of my hotel looked a bit weather-beaten but inside it had a bit of the feel of a traditional guest house, run by a friendly lady who, when I arrived, explained to me where the shops and eateries were. Was in my room in time for Judge Rinder, then after that caught most of Norman Wisdom's Just My Luck on the London Live channel.
The ten minute walk from the stadium ended with a walk over an arched footbridge over a dual carriageway, a bit of a hair-raising experience with a wind in the air. The ground, of recent vintage, had an impressively styled clubhouse, with Somersby strawberry and rhubarb cider on tap. Chat with Sam, Dave, Keith and Mark till we went outside to take seats in the stand 15 minutes before kick-off (delayed because some players had been late arriving).
Despite being two divisions lower, Ashford Town Middx Ladies gave the Orient girls a good game. Hayley lofted home a beauty to give Orient the lead on the half-hour, and on 74 minutes Leyre made it two with a cross shot from out wide. It ended 2-0. After the cup presentation, I went down to the touchline to talk to Lisa when she came over. Michael let me have a swig of the Prosecco bottle the girls had sprayed when they celebrated with the cup. Chris, on hearing that I'd taken two days off work and was staying in a hotel, invited me to join the team for celebrations in the clubhouse.
A chat with Leyre at the bar. Got a few more minutes with Lisa and a few words with Naomi, who'd played a blinder in goal. Saw the Cup close up on a table complete with red and white ribbons - it looked like a smaller version of the FA Cup. A tray of Easter crispy cake topped with Mini Eggs got passed round the girls, I got the penultimate piece. The girls began to drift away so I said my goodbyes.
