I'd arranged to meet up with Jules and Alice at Birmingham City Women v Reading Women today.
They arrived in the clubhouse at about 1.15, with their friend Sarah who I'd met in the Netherlands. Jules headed straight for me for a hug and kiss, we bagged seats and Jules and I made for the bar. We sat drinking and chatting about women's football, women we fancy (from footballers and a cricketer to actresses), old friends and old enemies, until it was time to head into the ground.
As the girls went to take up their usual viewing point on the far side, I went to seek out Rachel Williams, out injured for the season but often seen at home games. She was one of the warmest friendliest Lady Pies towards me, but to this day I'd never got round to asking her to have a pic done with me. As it's likely to be a long while before I come to Birminghsm again, I wanted to put that right today.
With kick-off imminent, Rachel appeared out of the tunnel and walked towards me. I said hello and asked if she'd had a good Christmas. She stopped to talk to a couple standing nearby. When their conversation paused, I asked Rachel if I could have a pic with her and she agreed. She asked if one of her friends could take the photo and I handed her friend my phone. Photo taken, with the match just kicking off, Rachel and I wished each other Happy New Year and I wandered over to the hog roast.
I posted the pic on Instagram, bought a hog roast and walked round to join the girls. It was exciting game with quite a bit of argy-bargy, a couple of disallowed goals, and banter between Grace Moloney in the Reading goal and the group of Birmingham fans stood behind her. Birminghsm won 2-1, all the goals coming in the last half-hour.
On and off throughout the match, the girls and I chatted some more about some of the players on display, reminisced about past women's football trips, planned future women's football trips, and shared the odd bit of gossip about players and fans, while Sarah kept us updated on the other games. Sarah relayed the happy news that the She-Gulls of Brighton (where three Lady Pies are) were two up at Liverpool, and it ended that way. Alice and I asked Jules if she was being a grinch because she wouldn't have us all move to the opposite corner to let Alice get a better view of Reading's Gemma Davison, who she fancies. Sarah and I urged Alice to go say hello to Gemma after the game, but she said she was too shy.
At the final whistle, the girls wanted to hit the road pronto so we said our goodbyes in the car park and I slipped back to the clubhouse for a swift half before getting the bus back to Birmingham International.
In the station I called in Subway for a Christmas Cracker Signature Loaded Wrap. Last festive food for 11 months :(
