Turkish Song of the Damned
Apr. 25th, 2013 11:12 pmTravelled back to Gosport yesterday.
Last night I failed, again, to hear this week's Classic Retro Countdown. Tuned online to Max Radio, only to hear last week's show. Well, I suppose we were getting nearer.
So had to try again at 5 pm today, on Atlantic Oldies, a station you can always rely on to air the right show as Richard the DJ always makes delivering them their copy a priority. Thank goodness, my laptop didn't have any technical hitches and I was finally able to hear this week's show, running down the top 40 of this week in 1973 - including this little gem.
Once the show ended at 7, I had to hurry down to Gosport Borough football ground, where my old Hawk pal Kim was playing for Gosport Borough Ladies in a top-of-the-table clash with Andover New Street Ladies. I'd told her via Facebook that I'd be coming. The team were warming up when I arrived; when she spotted me, Kim jogged over to the perimeter fence and gave me a hug and we had a quick chat. Standing in front of the stand were two other ex-Hawk girls, Laura and Jodie. We said quick hellos and had a proper catch-up in the clubhouse at half-time.
Laura was cheering Kim; I was supporting Gosport, not just for Kim but because it's my home town; Jodie's an ex-Andover New Street player so she was cheering her old team. Gosport seemed to be playing well most of the first half but conceded a goal around halfway through. They equalised from close range a bit later and took the lead early in the second half, but Andover scored two late goals to take the points, to Jodie's delight.
I waited for Kim in the clubhouse after. "Bit pants, wasn't it?" she said, and we had a few more quick words before she joined the rest of the players at the food table for the sausages and chips that had been laid on for them.
Going back to darkest Bedfordshire in the morning. At least there's TOTP 1978 and Whatever Happened To The Likely Lads? to come late tonight, well worth staying up for.
