Ladies who lunch
Dec. 8th, 2011 08:25 pmWent for my pre-booked Christmas lunch in the office canteen today. As the only member of my team who'd ordered one, I was assigned a table for one. At an adjacent table were Rachel and two of her colleagues. After the waitress went to fetch my starter, Rachel said "Don't sit there on your own, come and join us," and they shuffled their food, drinks and cracker contents around to make room for me. So they had to flag a confused waitress over when she came back with my butternut squash soup.
The food was excellent, especially my main course of pork schnitzel with all the trimmings. Over dinner we talked about how we'd be spending the festive season, the possibility of snow this winter (the ladies all love sledding in it), other Christmas meals they'd be going to, my impending departure to Milton Keynes, and who in our office has got Olympic tickets.
My Christmas pudding was lukewarm but tasted OK; Rachel took one bite of her apple strudel and announced that it was cold. So were the other two's, so one of them flagged over the chef and asked him to warm them up - although the third lady declined, saying she liked it cold. That had Rachel waxing lyrical about cold pizza.
As we dispersed to get our noses back to the grindstone, I thanked the ladies for inviting me to join them and one of them said to me "Thank you for being our mystery guest."
