Sep. 8th, 2011 06:14 pmWhen Fisher's home game with Holmesdale was moved to Tuesday night, with me having a job interview in Milton Keynes yesterday I'd thought my chances of seeing the match were sunk. Yes, London is on the way to MK, but I knew turning up at an interview carrying baggage would probably count against me.
An office conversation with Demelza and Melissa had brought salvation with the mention of left luggage facilities. The last I'd known of Euston, admittedly 10 years ago when fear of terrorists was at a high, they hadn't offered a left luggage service, but Demelza went on the net and, after finding that Milton Keynes Central station doesn't have one, she established that Euston does. Melissa added that many hotels also offer left luggage after you check out, and a quick check with the site of the Union Jack Club, where as a civil servant I'm eligible to stay, found that they do.
So on Tuesday after work I hopped straight onto a train for Waterloo. On arriving I crossed the road to the Union Jack, checked in and unloaded my gear, and beetled straight back over to Waterloo East to take a train to East Dulwich. Cracking match, Fisher came back from conceding an early goal to win 5-1.
After an excellent continental breakfast I glanced out of the window of my 19th floor room at the glorious view of the Old Vic and SE1, and hummed a snatch of the Pogues tune London, You're a Lady. Listened to a debate about benefits and childcare on Radio 5 until check-out time. Checked my suitcase in at the baggage room. The charge? £1.
Arrived in MK with plenty of time to go before the interview. Went for a walk around the town and thought, like Dave Gorman : I like this place. I could really see myself settling in there. The interview seemed to go OK, I think I made a positive impression, so here's hoping...
Coughing a fair bit today and sniffles still clinging on :( Today's the 30th anniversary of the first broadcast of Only Fools and Horses, so going to have a relaxing evening with back-to-back episodes on Gold.
