Girls And Boys
Aug. 29th, 2011 08:18 pmAn early start this morning to get to Beckenham for Fisher's 1 pm kick-off. I arrived outside the ground around 11.30, just as the first Beckenham players were arriving and the man with the keys was opening up the ground. "You're early," he said to me with a grin. The friendly barmaid began serving straight away - they sold Hürlimann - and the TVs were showing the World Athletics Championships, so I settled in one of the comfy chairs bang opposite one of the screens. I was rather taken with Marshevet Myers, the lady 100 metre runner *<3*
Nicholas and Tim arrived and we gathered round a table, joined by other Fish as they arrived. With kick-off approaching we gathered on the grass behind the goal in front of the clubhouse. I bought an excellent burger from the tea hut, which got an extra thumbs-up from me for having HP sauce.
Before the start we all took long thoughtful glances at Beckenham's main stand, which was ours from our much-missed Surrey Docks Stadium (our former chairman was also involved at Beckenham and moved our stand there when he moved us to Dulwich promising a redevelopment that never happened). Jude observed that we kicked off two minutes late. I said "Damn, we'll miss the ladies' 100 metres final" and Dan riposted "It'll be over in ten seconds" (he should have said 11 but I wasn't sad enough to point that out).
The banter was flying between us all during the opening minutes of the game; one home fan observed that we had a wicked sense of humour, and Tim said "You need one to support Fisher." Danny Hunt put us in front with the eighth minute with a rocket shot that would have been flying straight at me if the net hadn't been in the way. Fisher could have had three or four more but didn't get the ball in the net - and then Beckenham were awarded a penalty for what looked very much like ball to elbow. Danny's magic touch deserted him again as the Beckenham striker hit the stanchion. Then in the 37th minute Beckenham scored again with a header from a corner. "It's a scandal that we're losing at half-time," said George, and we speculated as to whether Super Steve O'Donnell would be brought on after the break.
Had a hot dog, also superb, from the tea hut at half-time. Went online on my phone to get the result of the women's 100 - my Marshevet didn't get a medal ;(
With no standing room behind the other goal, we all gathered along one of the long sides in the half Fisher were attacking. Super Stevie came on after an hour and scored a peach of a goal. Cue a chorus of "Walking in a Stevie wonderland" followed by Tim singing Ebony And Ivory.
Steve missed a good chance near the end, but on the bright side, soon afterwards Beckenham's ex-Fisher striker Elstrom Die missed a sitter. Cue a chant of "That's why we let you go" to the La Donna e Mobile tune.
It ended 2-2. Mark and a couple of others joined me on the train till we parted company at Waterloo, them to take the tube to the Oval for the end of Surrey v Durham and me to make the trek home.
Back in Chicken Town, was going to call at KFC for some nosh but the queue was a mile long, so moseyed on to Chickoribs.
