Oct. 29th, 2010 09:55 pmBack with the girls again, finally, yesterday evening. Drove over to our new winter home, the Locks Heath Recreation Ground, for the Portsmouth Cup quarter-final with AFC Dynamo. Dick said "welcome back" when I arrived and sent me over to the dressing room to say hello and good luck to the players. Lots of the lasses asked if I was feeling better now, though Yzzy concluded that I'd had Man Flu.
The ground was nice enough, a pretty standard set-up for a village side with floodlights, dug-outs and a perimeter fence. With Dynamo being in the Hampshire League Division 4 a couple of our party were expecting a turkey shoot, but they were actually a pretty decent side. Their players are all 16 or 17 and have come up through the age-banded youth leagues; this is their first season in senior football so they're having to start at the bottom of the pyramid, but going by last night's display they'll be climbing the divisions pretty quickly. They gave us a really good game and though Hawks won 4-0 we had to work hard for it. Lauren made up for a couple of missed sitters with two beautiful goals.
The clubhouse seemed fair dinkum, though, as it wasn't open before the match and I had to drive home straight after, I only got to pop in quickly for a coke at half-time. I'm definitely going to Sunday's game by bus, as they sell a locally brewed real ale, Upham Ale, that's a new one on me.
Today the canteen menu had a Halloween theme. I went for 'Witches' Brew', which turned out to be chicken and vegetable casserole served in a mini cauldron with a piece of garlic bread cut to the shape of a witch's hat sticking up. Quite tasty.
Just been down on the harbour front watching the fireworks from Gunwharf. Spectacular, and the accompaniment of red wine topped them off perfectly.
