Took my car for its MOT yesterday morning. Got off fairly lightly, it just needs two tyres replaced and a new exhaust clamp, making a total bill of £128 including test fee, plus however much the partial retest charge is.

Went to see Gosport Borough play Erith & Belvedere in the FA Cup Preliminary Round yesterday afternoon. After a Magners in the clubhouse, met Aussie, his 14-year-old daughter Anna and his young son Robert and we watched the match together at pitchside. A guy who clearly did lots of media stuff for the club came over to talk to Aussie. He asked me how often I came to see the Boro. I said once or twice a season, explaining that I mostly support Havant & Waterlooville.

"You can watch both, you can't support both," he replied. I contended that you can as the two teams inhabit different spheres (Hawks are two levels above Boro): "We're not likely to meet. The Hampshire Senior Cup doesn't count." The media man said the Gosport Borough board had ambitions to move the club up the pyramid so they could be meeting the Hawks within a few years. I observed that the way both teams are playing at the moment we could be in the same division next season!

Hawks legend Super Jimmy Taylor was in the Gosport lineup, and skimmed the crossbar with a header near the end, but the match was pretty dire and ended in a 0-0 draw.

Back home to change into my Hawks shirt to mosey down to Walpole Park and see Showaddywaddy at the Waterfront Festival. Given the band's links with HWFC, I'd hoped there'd be quite a turnout of Hawks, but initially didn't see any. Great performance by the 'Waddy as always though, and I did bump into my cousin Jacqui, her boyfriend Jim and a group of their friends, so stood with them until the immortal moment when Dave Bartram asked if there were any "Ha-VANT and Waterlooville fans" in the crowd. As well as me, someone else stood over on the other side waved. It was my mate Lee, so I darted over to join him. He asked if I'd been to the game at Dorchester that day; I hadn't, but knew it was a 0-0 draw. Lee said I hadn't missed anything. Stood with him was a lady Hawk who greeted me with a friendly peck on the cheek and said "Glad to see you're supporting Showaddywaddy." The band then swung into Under The Moon Of Love. Later via Facebook I learned there'd been another couple of Hawks there.

Out to Southampton today to see the Hawk girls take on the Saints ladies. As our ex-player Chelsea is now with them, her parents Rob and Christine, with whom I was quite friendly when she was with us, were there so I had a good catch-up chat with them before kick-off. When their group started to talk about X Factor, Julie, one of the Saints Ladies staff, began to wax lyrical about the boyband from Southampton who were put through last night and sighed "If I were only twenty years younger!"

"You could have a toy boy," I said to her. Julie recoiled "Oh no, I don't do toy boys! I'm not interested in younger men. I like older men." Rob chuckled "You're safe, Wilhelmus! We're all safe."

The girls took an early lead but their first half performance was decidedly laboured. Dick must have given them a good team talk; after the break they really got into their stride and added three more goals without reply. The fourth was a beautiful chip into the top of the net from Jenna, who'd already caused a sensation pre-match by announcing her engagement. After the game she was in shock at having scored - "I never score!" Then Yzzy came over and began angling for a wedding invitation.
