Aug. 7th, 2010 07:47 pmTo Boots in Fareham this morning, via breakfast at McDonald's, for an 8.40 am eye test. Well, I was due a routine check in any case and 1000 Boots advantage card points aren't to be sneezed at. They're very thorough - the actual eye examination was preceded by a few quick tests by an assistant, including one that featured four puffs of air into each eye. I had to retake this for one of my eyes at the end - apparently I hadn't opened that one wide enough. The optician said I wouldn't need any radical change in my lens settings, but that I could do with a new pair as my existing lenses are showing some wear and tear after four years. Invited to browse their range of frames, with my finances the way they are I had to concentrate my browsing on the single column of £25 and £49 styles; I picked an OK-looking thin gold-coloured pair at the latter price. The optician had said that thin lenses would be a good idea, so when the lady taking down my specifications asked if I wanted them I said yes.
"That will be £60 extra." That was the end of that idea.
Into the farmers' market to replenish my supply of local honey, then back to Chicken Town to get my Big Issue.
With the Conference South season still a week away, craving competitive football I headed for Cams Alders where Fareham Town were kicking off their Wessex League season against Christchurch. The bar still serves Magners and, even better news, bacon rolls are now back on the tea hut menu. Climbing the rows of the stand before kick off I spotted fellow Hawk John, who summed up our reason for being there : "It's good to be at a game of football again."
In my row was Mike, a local ref I've met when he's officiated the odd Hawks Ladies game. As I passed him at half time on my way down to the bar, he said "I thought you'd be at Havant." I explained that Hawks only had a friendly against lower-league opposition and that I'd be back at Westleigh Park once the proper matches started. Mike asked "Are you still following the Hawks Ladies? It's the 22nd of August they kick off, isn't it?"
"Yes, Forest Green away."
"Are you going?"
"Yes."
"Silly question."
It was a decent game, Fareham winning 3-0 with some well taken goals, but the tidings from Sky Sports News were less happy : East Stirlingshire lost 3-1 at Annan. But our unloved neighbours and taxpayer-pickpocketers Portsmouth getting gubbed 2-0 at Coventry made me smile.
