Aug. 1st, 2010 08:42 pmThe Hawk girls were due to play today's pre-season friendly with Lewes at Westleigh Park. But Galey had gone up to Petersfield, whom the men were meant to visit in a friendly tomorrow night, inspected the pitch and said "We can't play on that." So the Petersfield game tomorrow night had to be switched to Westleigh, putting the pitch out of bounds today and leaving the Ladies to switch their match to Sussex. Finally, at 6 pm yesterday evening, Pease Pottage FC agreed to host the girls' game.
So I hitched a lift with Trev down to sunny Pease Pottage. The change from home to away meant we lost a few girls who were working this morning and again were left with a threadbare team. Several of them were pissed off at having to come all that way because of a men's friendly being moved at short notice. The gentleman and lady who ran their clubhouse were friendly and welcoming; there was a Bulmers bottle on display behind the bar so I ordered one. The lady said all they had was pear, but a bottle of that with ice went down nicely enough.
The team performance was a bit on the ropy side in the first half although the defence was always sound as a pound and Stacie played well foraging down her wing. As they trooped off at half time a couple of the girls were moaning about making an hour-and-a-half car journey down there all to put in a ropy performance with a skeleton team. Dick gave the girls a rallying team talk and the girls came back revitalised, taking plenty of shots on goal. The game ended 0-0 but everyone was satisfied with the second-half showing.
